Portraits is a small American company building what we believe is the first genuinely good use of generative image models in a physical consumer product — a framed piece on your wall that looks like it was made for you, because it was.
Our story
Portraits started with a question Jordan kept hearing during his six years leading product for Etsy's home-decor category: “Can you change this one thing?” Buyers loved the idea of a personalized piece but hated the reality — templated art, dropdown customization, six-week timelines, and the nagging sense that the final thing would still look vaguely generic.
By late 2023, generative image models had crossed a threshold where a careful pipeline could turn a customer's brief into something genuinely gallery-worthy. We spent nine months building that pipeline — the prompt interface, the style library, the production handoff — and another three partnering with an independent fine-art print house in Portland to make sure the physical piece matched the digital promise.
We launched in 2024. Today a Portraits order takes a brief from you, runs it through a generation pipeline owned by our engineering team, passes through a human reviewer, prints on FSC-certified paper, gets framed in real American hardwood, and ships to your door in under a week.
