Float Frame
A float frame (or floater frame) is a frame style where the artwork sits inside the frame with a visible gap on all sides, making it appear to float.
Float frames are most commonly used with canvas prints and thick-stretched artwork. Instead of the frame overlapping the edges of the art, the artwork sits on a tray inside the frame with a 1/4" to 1/2" gap all around, giving the appearance that the piece is floating within the frame.
The effect is contemporary and gallery-forward. It draws attention to the edges of the work and gives the impression of a piece that's been mounted with care.
Float frames are most effective on canvas, deep-panel prints, or works with painterly texture. They're less commonly used on paper prints, which typically use a traditional overlap frame with a mat board.
